University of Gharyan Research and Consultation Center Organizes Scientific Seminar on Earthquakes and Risk Mitigation

As part of the University of Gharyan’s commitment to promoting scientific awareness and serving the community, the Research and Consultation Center at the University of Gharyan organized a scientific seminar on earthquakes, their causes, and ways to mitigate their risks. The seminar was held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in the auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering.

The seminar was attended by Dr. Mohammed Gouma, President of the University of Gharyan, Dr. Emhamed Al-Habshi, Director of the Research and Consultation Center, members of the Center’s Scientific Committee, directors of the Research and Consultation Offices at the University’s faculties, as well as a number of faculty members. The event also brought together guests from the Remote Sensing and Space Sciences Center and representatives of civil society organizations.

The scientific program featured three specialized presentations. The first, entitled “Causes of Earthquakes, Their Measurement, and Risk Reduction,” was delivered by Mr. Mahmoud Al-Dhabaa from the Faculty of Science. The presentation addressed the causes and factors contributing to earthquakes, methods of measuring seismic activity, and key measures for reducing their potential impacts and risks.

The second presentation, delivered by Engineer Fawzi Abu Sitta from the Remote Sensing and Space Sciences Center, focused on “Earthquakes and the National Seismic Monitoring Network.” It addressed the role of seismic monitoring systems in tracking earthquake activity and highlighted the importance of the national monitoring network in collecting and providing reliable seismic data and information.

The third presentation, delivered by Dr. Aisha Al-Yaqubi from the Faculty of Education, Gharyan, addressed “The Possibility of Predicting Earthquakes.” The presentation explored the scientific aspects of identifying potential indicators of seismic activity and the current limitations associated with predicting earthquake occurrence.

Following the presentations, an in-depth discussion and open dialogue was held with the attendees. The discussion featured numerous questions and contributions concerning the causes of earthquakes, seismic monitoring and prediction, as well as strategies for reducing their potential risks and impacts on society.

The seminar forms part of the Research and Consultation Center’s efforts to strengthen its scientific and community engagement role, promote collaboration between the University, research institutions, and civil society organizations, and raise scientific awareness of issues relevant to public safety and the environment.
